Acre Family

Leonard Acre was from Wayne County, Kentucky and married Sarah Ballard there in 1824. The Acre family name has been spelled several different way by different branches of the family and at different times. Leonard used the spelling “Acre.”

Leonard is almost certainly the grandson of William Acree who was born in Frederick County, Maryland in 1752 and lived in Wayne County, Kentucky. William’s surname is consistently spelled “Acree.” His first wife was Phoebe. Her maiden name is unknown. William had several children by his first wife. Leonard was the son of John Acrea and Catherine Rich. It appears that John and his at some of his descendents used the spelling “Acrea.”

DNA testing indicates that William is not descended from the Acre family of Surrey County, Virginia, but is probably descended from the Aker family of New Jersey. The chart below show the ancestry of Leonard Acre. Click on chart to see larger version.
